Birthing Stories Project: Student Interns 2023

An exciting aspect of our Birthing Stories project is the involvement of undergraduate and graduate students as interns. In 2023, students from Ghana and Canada will work with researchers and advocates to learn firsthand about how research can contribute to the protection of human rights for mothers impacted by albinism. The interns will engage in research activities like video analysis, literature review and knowledge translation through social media. They will learn from our intersectoral research team which comprises of advocates, healthcare providers, policymakers, and scholars who have expertise related to albinism through their clinical practice, academic roles and/or advocacy work. We anticipate that the team’s engagement with our interns will be mutually enriching.

Watch this space in the next months for blog posts about their learning!

For 2023, the following are our student interns:

Rebecca Kyeraa Amankona, University of Ghana, Accra, Ghana 🇬🇭

My name is Rebecca Kyeraa Amankona, a Ghanaian and a third year student at the University of Ghana studying for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with a specialty in Public Health. Personality wise, I am an outgoing, ambitious and open-minded person and I enjoy socializing with people and making acquaintances. Growing up, I have always known myself to have an inclination towards the health of people and an earnest interest in healthcare and well-being of individuals which influenced my decision to pursue nursing as a field of study and future career. I usually spend my leisure time reading and occasionally, watching movies.

Kiel Mayich, Trinity Western University, Langley, Canada 🇨🇦

My name is Kiel and I and a 3rd year Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) student at Trinity Western University. I grew up in Mongolia and Thailand as an expatriate for a total of 13 years. Living in these countries, I developed a love for the outdoors and participating in activities I have not done before. Whether the activity is horseback riding in the countryside of Mongolia, finding cliff diving locations on motorcycle rides through Thai mountains, or getting dropped off via helicopter to plant trees in northern BC, I love to find adventure anywhere. Creating order in chaos has been one of the driving motivators for me choosing a career in nursing.

Emmanuel Osei, Central University,, Mitso, Ghana 🇬🇭

My name is Emmanuel Osei. I consider myself as very enthusiastic reliable and committed individual with a passion for excellence. I want to practice my profession in a more challenging way, share my knowledge, expertise, and express my ability by extending a voice to the voiceless and help to the helpless. I have a high ambition to achieve greater height through the use of human rights protection programs and platforms. These together with my interest in other cultures, positive attitude and good character have given me confidence and ability to work in any built environment. I love to swim and read for leisure.

Nazifa Rashid, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦

Hello everyone! My name is Nazifa Rashid, and I am a second-year Health Studies student at the University of Toronto. I was raised in Toronto and have spent most of my life here, but I am eager to start exploring the world! In my free time, you can find me near a body of water, biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and bungee-jumping, but during the week, I am working hard towards earning my degree and maintaining a couple part-time jobs. I work in recreation, planning and leading all sorts of fun events for youth, from craft programs to obstacle courses to scavenger hunts! I am excited to join the team at Mothering and Albinism and learn more about the interconnections between community health and international development, another one of my fields of interest. I look forward to critically analyzing what it means to be a global citizen through this position and creating positive change along the way!

Cole Siebert, Trinity Western University, Langley, Canada 🇨🇦

Hi I am Cole Siebert, a 3rd year student at Trinity Western University, majoring in nursing with a minor in human kinetics. I am passionate about understanding people as that is how we can help each other better. I also love fitness, working on my car, understanding the human body, hiking and mountain biking. This is my first involvement with a research project and I am here to learn lots and to be open to as many new ideas and perspectives as I can grasp.

Adzeglo Tugbe, University of Ghana, Accra, Ghana 🇬🇭

My name is Adzeglo Tugbe, and I am a Ghanaian and a level 300 student at the University of Ghana. I am studying in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, with the specialty of public health nursing. I am an emotional person, someone who feels deeply. I care a lot about people, especially the less privileged, the poor, orphans and the needy, due to my personality. It has always been my dream to build charity homes some day to come, so that I can make my dream come into reality. I have had a long-term goal of completing my  nursing degree, because I care about people’s health a lot, which is one of the main reasons I am currently pursuing my dream of becoming a nurse in a year’s time. My hobbies are reading books, watching, movies and having my quiet times during my leisure times.
