Mothering & Albinism Featured in the Re.Search Magazine

The University of Pretoria publishes a digital research magazine called Re.Search Magazine featuring future-focused, multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary research that has global impact. Each issue, they highlight the multiplicity and impactful research of the University of Pretoria community and their collaborators. They promote innovation and multifaceted approaches to their research to explore and address global concerns and promote African solutions.

Recommendations promoted at the Public Forum and spotlighted in the Re.Search Magazine:

  • Raise awareness about albinism by working with policymakers, advocates, healthcare providers, educators, faith leaders, traditional healers and community members.
  • Embrace children with albinism and affirm that they can thrive when they are accepted by their family and community. Ensure that parents are provided with education about the genetic causes of albinism starting at birth.
  • Provide support for mothers and their children, including access to vision and skin care (including sunscreen), and access to a disability grant.
  • Empower the work of NGOs and civil societies through awareness and funding.
  • Strengthen and implement government policies on gender equality and disability rights.
  • Adopt the African Union Plan of Action to End Attacks and Other Human Rights Violations Targeting Persons with Albinism in Africa (Plan of Action 2021 – 2031).
